What program activities (I) could help delirium patients (P) experience less delirium symptoms (O) after three months (T) compared to those relying on medication (C)?
Non-Pharmacological Interventions for the Behavioral Symptoms of Dementia and Delirium
The PICOT study will examine the use of non-pharmacological interventions to manage delirium and dementia. The goal is to provide evidence-based practices that nurses could integrate into their practice. The non-pharmacological interventions include cognitive rehabilitation therapy and program activities. The targeted patient outcomes will include lowering reliance on medication to minimize the potential side effects of the medication. Delirium patients will participate in art-based activities, and older ones will participate in the elder life program activities by Basso (2020). Dementia patients will participate in the steps of cognitive rehabilitation therapy (Hindle et al., 2018; Kudlicka et al., 2019). Therefore, the PICOT project will examine non-pharmacological interventions for dementia and delirium patients.
PICOT Questions:
What program activities (I) could help delirium patients (P) experience less delirium symptoms (O) after three months (T) compared to those relying on medication (C)?
To what extent does cognitive rehabilitation therapy (I) help dementia patients (P) experience the least symptoms (O) after three months (T) compared to those that solely rely on medication (C)?
How can the non-pharmacological interventions (I) integrate into nursing practices for patients to help the (P) experience less (C) reliance on medication (O) after three months (T) compared to those that solely rely on medication?
