What aspect of New Zealand culture or society is represented?
We were to choose an aspect of New Zealand culture/society that is represented in the media. I chose “That men are pressured to be ‘manly’ cause of the flawed masculinity culture within New Zealand.”
For the introduction here are questions to answer:
What aspect of New Zealand culture or society is represented?
What factors surround/influence the representation?
What links the representation to New Zealand society?
What is the impact of the representation and on whom – i.e. what angle are you using?
For each paragraph, you must talk about a primary text and what the representation is and how it is shown.
-For my first primary text (paragraph 1) chose the film ‘Savage’ which Represents the amount of pressure put on males in New Zealand to fit the traditional ‘masculine’ role when growing up and in adulthood.
For my second primary text (Paragraph 2) have chosen an article from stuff that represents how males are told from a young age to not be emotional because of the hyper-masculine culture in NZ (https://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff-nation/17243898/Ditch-the-man-up-mentality)
For my third primary text (paragraph 3) have chosen another article from stuff that represents what many New Zealanders believe as being masculine and how this traditional kiwi stereotype should not be what masculine is (https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/life/83966192/new-zealands-flawed-ideal-of-masculinity#:~:text=Men%20take%20the%20Kiwi%20’she,doesn’t%20make%20it%20okay.&text=If%20you’re%20male%20and,probably%20continued%20into%20your%20adulthood.)
The structure of the essay should look something like this.
Introduction-
Representation in Primary media text 1-
Representation in Primary media text 2-
Representation in Primary media text 3-
Impact/significance of representation-
conclusion-
