Critically discuss whether future generations will have enough fossil fuels, minerals, biomass and water to enjoy the same standard of living as we do today.
Sustainability and Climate change
According to Chris Goodall, the first criteria for sustainability is that, ‘our use of materials, fuels and products of the soil must not reduce the resources available to future generations if this constrains their standard of living below ours’. So, are we going to run out of anything?
Critically discuss whether future generations will have enough fossil fuels, minerals, biomass and water to enjoy the same standard of living as we do today. Where possible try to quantitatively evaluate the future sustainability of these things based on facts and figures rather than limiting your discussion to qualitative arguments. In each case, critically discuss the various ways in which engineers might make a difference illustrating your points with suitable examples.
