Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of European imperialism in Africa and its social and economic impacts to be found in selected primary sources.

Your analysis should answer the question by explaining which 3 sources you selected, how and why you selected them, and what they contribute to your understanding of the question. It is essential that you go beyond description of three primary sources towards contextualization, interpretation, and analysis of the 3 primary sources in relation to each other and to secondary literature (minimum 2 items). The items of secondary literature discussed should be academically rigorous (see ‘What to read for assignments?’ above). When you use ideas and information from primary sources or secondary literature, you should acknowledge the source of the ideas or information by providing a footnote reference and you must include a bibliography. The word limit for this assignment is 1000 words exclusive of footnotes and bibliography. It is important that you adhere to the word limit. This is because we will stop marking at the +10% point so any additional words will not be considered. Conversely, an underweight source-based analysis is unlikely to explore all aspects of the question and will likely score lower marks.

Learning aims for Assignment 2

Through this assignment, you will be able to:

Assignment 4

Part 1

What two national security sectors of concern might require CSIS and RCMP intelligence collaboration,to counter or reduce a threat? Explain why and how they might collaborate. (two sectors explained, and CSIS and RCMP collaboration explained)

Using your own example scenario, explain how, where and why the RCMP, CAF and CSE might have to engage in intelligence collaboration on an issue. (credible and relevant scenario, intelligence collaboration explained, and properly use the word “discombobulate” somewhere in the response)

Explain the role of affirmative action in combating both modern and traditional institutional discrimination.

Effects of the Industrial Revolution

The course readings for Module 2 discuss the effects of the Industrial Revolution, and how this event led to the recognition of the three subgroups: Northern and Western, Protestant Europeans, and Norway.

In an ever-going society of progression and acceptance of all, we strive to create inclusivity, opportunity, and an equal justice system void of bias. Some of the most common practices of institutional discrimination can be seen in harsher sentencing of crimes based on race and ethnicity, predatory lending practices from financial institutions, educational opportunities, and access to resources. Some historic landmark cases that presented as race discrimination are:

Korematsu v. United States (1944)

Brown v. Board of Education (1955)

Jones v. Mayer Co. (1968)

University of California Regents v. Bakke (1986)

Shuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action (2014)

Assignment

Write a research paper that includes the following:

Describe the lived experiences modern institutional discrimination for one of the three identified subgroups or any minority group.

Explain how the above-mentioned experiences differ from “traditional” institutional discrimination of non-minority groups.

Explain the role of affirmative action in combating both modern and traditional institutional discrimination.

Finally, provide an example of what positive changes society is making post-industrial revolution to assist immigrants with institutional discrimination.

Format

Your paper must be 1200–1600 words

Do not forget to include a thesis statement (statement of purpose/intent) and indicate the topics to be covered

Use only professional, objective language

Use APA style

You must have two scholarly articles referenced that provide support for the material that is addressed

What is the primary purpose of prison, and how can this be best achieved?

What is the primary purpose of prison, and how can this be best achieved?

This is a very general question. That is intentional so that it allows you to tackle it from the direction you want.

To get started – read and take notes as you go so you can work this up later

Marking Criteria

1100 words.

Make your points based on reading material posted on Moodle. Marks are going here for doing the readings on Moodle.

Reference where the points come from. Do it like this: (O’Brien, 2018) for a general point from a chapter. (O’Brien 2018: 218) where you are referring to a specific point or quote. Referencing is showing off – so don’t be shy about this.

Read at least 4 chapters well, and demonstrate that you understand the work in its entirety (i.e. not just grabbing a point from here and there)

Keep quotes to a minimum – paraphrase. Lots of quotes looks lazy. So,put the points from the readings into your own words, and assemble the evidence and analyses from the readings into your own argument. Good writing is: saying the most you can, as briefly as you can, as clearly as you can.

Bibliography at the end, listing all of the details about the work referred to. Revise how to do this – but the basics are:

Lastname of author, Firstname (year of publication) Title, Place of publication if a book, Publisher if a book, Title of journal if a journal, Edition and volume and page numbers if a journal.

3. Critically analyse comparative approaches to service provision in one other country.

4. Evaluate research findings in relation to policy and practice.

Clearly identify your international policy, make sure that you talk about that countries approach to welfare provisions overall and consider what policies they have in place which most closely match your chosen policy. Discuss if the international appro.

Talk about how governments may implement policies, which may result in the oppression of people, and which hinder anti-oppressive practice, or how governments implement policies which promote anti-oppressive practice, you must provide evidence to support your arguments.

For large and complex policies, you may wish to select just a component of the policy for analysis and comparison, this is acceptable, however, you must still discuss the wider context of your policy and you must ensure it is clear what element of the policy will be your focus.

ONE UK POLICY AND ONE INTERNATIONAL POLICY, ALTHOUGH THIS MAY BE DIFFICULT TO GET THE FULL EXTENT OF A UK POLICY, GET ONE THAT IS CLOSET TO THE UK POLICY.

Discuss how these factors, such as Confucian culture,a century of foreign invasions and historical trauma, influence of the Russian communist revolution,Marxist-Leninist ideological totalism, and the May 4th Movement, contribute to the rise of communism in modern China?

Chinese History

1. Discuss how these factors, such as Confucian culture,a century of foreign invasions and historical trauma, influence of the Russian communist revolution,Marxist-Leninist ideological totalism, and the May 4th Movement, contribute to the rise of communism in modern China?

2. Chinese political development has demonstrated a pattern dominated by power, ideology, and organization. What are the nature and characteristics of power, ideology, and organization in traditional China (under imperial rule) and contemporary China (under the CCP rule)? 3. Since the late 1970s, some considerable changes have taken place in post-Mao China. Has the post-Mao regime moved away from communist state or continued to retain the hard core of ideas and institutions of communist state. In other words, is it change of regime or change within the regime? Your work must first briefly define the Leninist party-state, and change of regime vs. change within the regime, which is used as the basic criteria for evaluation, and show careful development of your logical arguments, using clearly defined theoretical criteria of communist party state as the reference points for the evaluation and drawing upon empirical evidence from the textbook chapters to support your arguments. Your analysis must be conducted along two major empirical dimensions of China’s political development: ideological and political (do not talk about economy, society, culture, etc. but only on the ideology and political institutions)

4. What’s the “rule of law” vis “rule by law”? What legal changes have taken place in post-Mao China? To what extent such changes have affected the nature of the legal system? Has post-Mao China established “rule of law”? Why?

What aspects of this history strike you as particularly interesting, surprising,or otherwise noteworthy?

Women in Mathematics

1. In the lecture and reading, we learn about some of the earliest women to appear in the recorded history of mathematics. To what extent were you previously aware of this early history? Which, if any, of the women mathematicians were already familiar to you? Do you detect any common themes, or striking differences, in the individual stories of these women? What do you find surprising about their stories?

2. What aspects of the history of women in the US mathematical community, as related in the chapter from Women Becoming Mathematicians, were new to you? What aspects of this history strike you as particularly interesting, surprising, or otherwise noteworthy? To what extent do you think your own experience of mathematics has been shaped by some of the forces described in that chapter?

3. Select one or two of the women mathematicians discussed in this week’s lecture and reading and make the case as to why they should be better known. What do you think would be the best way to get their stories out? For example, do you think they should be the subject of a feature film? Do you think their stories should be incorporated into pre-college courses in mathematics, history, or social studies? Use your imagination here.
