A Post-Cold War World: The diffusion of power, expansion of transnational threats, and America’s growing rivalry with Russia and China

This paper will consider a contrast between the two following major themes. First, the post-Cold War world has been marked by a global context of expanding transnational threats demanding increased cooperation among nation-states.

Second, the years since the end of the Cold War are characterized by a diffusion of power and, especially in the past few years, increased rivalry and tension between the United States and competing powers China and Russia. You will essentially evaluate the tension between the cooperation required to deal effectively with transnational challenges and the competition among the great powers that sometimes impedes such cooperation.

More specifically, you are asked to address whether cooperation on the post Cold War transnational challenges threaten national power, interests and sovereignty. This essay will address the central policy conundrum of whether the leading states can cooperate on matters vital to all of humanity at acceptable costs to themselves and everyone else?

REQUIRED:

Choose two modern transnational challenges (either terrorism, economic globalization, infectious diseases or climate change), and evaluate how national security and global security are interdependent in context of the challenges.

ALSO REQUIRED:

Answer the following two questions relating to your two chosen modern global policy challenges

1. Why are terrorism, globalization, diseases,or climate change multifaceted in terms of how they are defined as policy problems? Specifically, how are they viewed as economic, political, and/or environmental policy problems, and also security ones? Explain these dimensions for your set of two challenging policy problems.

2. Do you find a clash between the interests of sovereign states and the demands of fully addressing your two policy problems (i.e., terrorism, globalization, diseases, or climate change)? How might these tradeoffs be resolved to find effective global solutions to your policy problems, and what, in your opinion, is the likelihood of effective cooperation on your two policy problems?

Compare and contrast the two major parties’ policy positions as stated in their most recent political platforms (2020).

Party Platforms Comparison

One central component of our course is understanding the ways in which political parties provide cues for voters, including the creation of policy platforms.

In this research assignment, students will compare and contrast the two major parties’ policy positions as stated in their most recent political platforms (2020). Specifically, students will identify three policy issues to contrast (for example, the economy).

The paper will focus on differences between the policy positions and should also make an argument as to why students believe the party has taken this specific position. Additionally, to provide some historical context for our simulation, students will compare the 2020 party platforms with the Democrats’ and Republicans’ platforms from 1912. These platforms are accessible through the American Presidency Project’s website.

If at all possible, look at three policy areas from 1912 related to those you have selected for the 2020 platforms and compare them with the previous policy positions your paper should describe how the parties’ positions have changed, or not, when compared to their own platforms over 100 years ago.

The paper should be 4 pages long.

Social Movements are only as important as the person leading them. The person(s) leading a social movement must have charisma and be able to captivate an audience. Political scientists and historians are taught to analyze body language, especially during debates and speeches.

For this assignment, you will watch Dr Martin Luther King’s Have a Dream speech and a speech by Alicia Garza of the Black Lives Matter movement and answer questions listed below. Pay special attention to the following aspects in the two speeches.

Importance of body language while delivering the speech.
Gestures, cadence and delivery style.
Answer the following

Provide a summary of the two speeches.

Compare Dr. King’s leadership, charisma, power and passion to capture his audience to Alicia Garza’s speech. What are the similarities, if any? What are the differences, if any?

How does the location of the speeches support their messaging? Dr. King’s speech was held in a church and at the Lincoln Memorial, whereas today we have social networking and more avenues to relay messages. Does messaging make a difference?
