Explain in detail. It is important that you approach answering the essay question on your scholarship application as you would if you were writing an essay for an English 1301 or 1302 class. 1. Read through the question, and make sure you understand it. 2. Be sure to respond to each part of the question. 3. Be as specific as you can to support what you say about your qualifications and life experiences.
Try to think of examples that will show the reader what you mean. 4. Check your punctuation and grammar. Proofread carefully. 5. If time allows, leave your response for a short time, then go back and proofread it again before submitting it.
Discuss Tricia Rose’s critique of commercial hip-hop in detail for your weekly response. In your response explain two of the key economic and/or cultural factors in Tricia Rose’s theory of the “narrowing of hip-hop images” and the “trinity of commercial hip-hop.” Include an account of radio and corporate consolidation in your account.
Finally, choose one contemporary artist that you think either demonstrates or counters some of Rose’s account of commercial hip-hop.
Explore Loren Kajikawa’s ideas about hip-hop and cultural “rearticulation” . Choose one artist who you think represents the idea of rearticulation clearly and had an important impact.
Discuss your example emphasizing rearticulation either in terms of class, race, gender, or sexuality. Your artist can either be American or international. Cite one online article discussing your chosen artist , and quote Kajikawa’s article at least once in your response.
1. Re-read Take a Closer Look: Exploring Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” in your textbook.
2. Carefully listen to the piano piece “Clair de Lune” and critically examine its components, style, context, and influence. Listen for and try identifying at least TWO basic elements of music described in the required Module 6 textbook pages. You may also wish to refer back to the Module 6 Online Exploration resources as well as the required pages in your textbook for Module 6.
3. Read the essay “Musical Impressionism: The Early History of the Term” by Ronald L. Byrnside from The Musical Quarterly, Vol. 66, No. 4 (October, 1980), pp. 522-537, published by Oxford University Press here in Module 6.
4. Now that you’ve carefully examined and researched the work of music, write and submit the finished essay using at least three fully developed paragraphs and at least 500 words, in which you:
Describe Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” analytically. In doing this, identify at least TWO basic elements of music described in the Module 6 required textbook pages “The Basic Elements of Music.”
Identify the “mood” of the song. What kind of “Impression” does it give you?
Explain whether “Clair de Lune” is Apollonian or Dionysian, and provide evidence supporting your argument.
Knowing that “Clair de Lune” belongs to a musical school known as Impressionism describe the similarities and differences between Impressionism as an artistic movement and as a movement in music. Use evidence from “Clair de Lune” and your exploration of Impressionism to support your arguments.
Conclude by commenting on whether or not you believe that Music and Visual Art should share an artistic classification such as “Impressionism.” In other words, does referring to “Clair de Lune” AND Claude Monet’s “Impression Sunrise” both as “Impressionism” make sense? Or is this just an example of Academicians in Humanities making an unnecessary connection?
Be sure to use and cite “Musical Impressionism: The Early History of the Term” by Ronald L. Byrnside and/or another essay you have already found and read as a research source article concerning the musical school and movement known as Impressionism.

Coursework One – Individual 15 minute power point presentation, plus accompanying notes/script to be presented in-class in week 9 or in week 10 – worth 50% of the module
The presentation requires you to provide an analysis and description lasting 15 minutes of a relevant academic paper(s). There is no set word length for this assignment. You have been provided with themed folders on Moodle which contain multiple journal articles. You can choose to do your presentation on just one journal article, or on two articles, but unless otherwise cleared with me, they must both be from the same themed folder .
You can also do your presentation on one or two articles that you discover yourself, but you MUST clear this with me beforehand, so I have time to look at those articles
The presentation requires you to provide a clear description and a critical analysis of ONE or TWO relevant academic papers. As mentioned above, you have been provided with a wide choice of papers . You are expected to critique the article(s) you choose by, in part, drawing upon other relevant literature, such as academic books and academic journal articles and, if relevant, non-academic books and quality journalism.
