What do they not get? What do we need to be able to tell a fuller, more accurate, live Bronx story? Whose voices should we hear? What sounds should we hear?

The Bronx Economy Project

Think about this borough, what’s happening, how people are managing, suffering, hustling, thriving, living during and after Covid?
What do we need to tell the world about this?
What do the people who read the economy from the centers of economic influence, the Federal Reserve Bank, Wall Street, the Labor Department or the White House or City Hall miss?
What do they not get?
What do we need to be able to tell a fuller, more accurate, live Bronx story? Whose voices should we hear?
What sounds should we hear?
What ideas need to get communicated to listeners?
Think these things out for a few minutes. Then post a few sentences or bullet points on whose voices, whose experiences we need to capture to tell the story of the economy in the Bronx during Covid and at this moment. In class we mentioned for example, the Mr. Softee guy and a coquito cart man and a nurse. Write out a few sentences of your thoughts a few Bullet points.

What are the specific techniques used? Were they used in any special way? What is the relevance of these findings to the larger world of scientific knowledge?

Pretend that you are a journalist for a popular media outlet . You are reporting on the research conducted in the paper that you have chosen. Assume your readership is not informed about cognitive neuroscience or any technical jargon.
What are the results? Describe them in terms that are understandable.
How does the new information fit with previous findings on this topic? Are there alternative explanations for the results?
What is a potential follow-up study?
– Are there any alternative hypothesis or predictions? What are they?
– What is the experimental design and control/test groups or comparisons ?
– What are the specific techniques used? Were they used in any special way?
– What is the relevance of these findings to the larger world of scientific knowledge?
– Are there alternative explanations for the results?
– What would be a potential follow-up study? ßThis is the most important part!

What are the five questions we should ask each of the people we interview in order to get them talking?

In class we talked about the big questions we want the Bronx Covid Economy Reporting project to engage with. These are the meta questions: Why was Covid so bad here?
Why did more Latinos than other race/ethnic groups die from Covid?
How did the legacies of redlining and structural racism shape what happened in Covid?
How/Did communities come together in crisis to support eachother?
How can the economy be rebuilt in a way that works for more people?

Those are the big, almost philosophical questions. In order to get listeners thinking about those questions in the piece we produce, we need to first ask smaller, more concrete and specific questions of the people we are interviewing.

So now in this assignment I want you to write those smaller questions.

What are the five questions we should ask each of the people we interview in order to get them talking?
The people I will be interviewing are, Home daycare providers and home health aides, senior citizens and DACA students, people who work as supers and people who work in restaurants, people who get housing vouchers and people who applied for unemployment, etc.
All these voices in a series will be a symphony of witnesses to the story of Covid's economy in the Bronx.
