How has the phenomenon of cultural regulation actually made culture more interesting?

Censorship and Creativity

One of the main themes we have discussed in the past three weeks is the idea that censorship is not purely a repressive practice but that it also had productive and even creative elements to it. Taking into account the many different practices, ideas, and values described in the texts we have read, how has the phenomenon of cultural regulation actually made culture more interesting? Looking back from our vantage point today, whether it is on the Old Regime in France or on the BBC in the 1920s, have attempts to control access to information and media ever succeeded in the long run?

Write an essay discussing these issues. Your paper should be between 900 and 1,100 words long. Include the word count in the text, as well as your name and the date. Use a standard font and double spacing. You can decide which citation style to use. While you should engage with the texts you have read for this class, make sure to develop your own ideas on these issues. Try to think of examples we have not discussed in class. Maximize analysis and interpretation and minimize summary. If you have questions about any part of this assignment, contact

Is the author doing a “close reading” of long texts or gathering small bits of information from many texts?

Write an analysis of the article that addresses ALL of the following (650-750 words should be enough):

MAIN IDEA: Summarize in a few sentences of the article, being sure to state clearly what the author is trying to PROVE.

As you summarize/synthesize, make sure you provide the reader with a clear understanding of the who, what, when, where, why, and how of this particular historical case/question. AND be sure your explanation of the thesis communicates how the author makes an ARGUMENT and uses EVIDENCE to support the argument.

SOURCES: Summarize in a few sentences the kinds of primary sources AND secondary sources that are being used (being sure to distinguish between the two). Questions to answer here would be:

Are the primary sources mostly written records (documents) or other kinds of sources?

What KIND of sources are they? What information do they contain? Where do they come from? (Examples: court records, town council minutes, private correspondence)

How are different primary AND secondary sources being used: Which sources are motivational? Which are contextual? Evidential? Anecdotal?

Methodology: Summarize in a few sentences HOW the author is extracting, compiling and using the information gathered from sources. Be as precise as you can. Questions to consider here would be:

Is the author doing a “close reading” of long texts or gathering small bits of information from many texts?

Are things being counted? If so, what’s being counted and how are the sums, averages, etc. being presented and interpreted?

How many sources have been gathered and used in different ways?

Takeaway: Summarize in a few sentences how you respond/assess the article: Questions to consider here would be:
how useful was this article in helping you understand the topic that drew your interest in the first place?

Was the article well-written or not? Why or why not?

Does reading the article inspire other questions that you would like to find answers to? What are they? What kinds of sources do you think might contain answers?

Civil Rights News Source-Select a contemporary article on a current civil rights issue. What counts as an article?

Civil Rights News Source Review 1

Select a contemporary article on a current civil rights issue. What counts as an article? An article on a website, in a newspaper or magazine, or a broadcast by a recognized television or radio publication all count as articles for our purposes here, as long as they were published (or broadcast) on or after Jan. 1, 2016. You may turn to the places you usually find your information or news, as long as they are reputable sources of fact-based news, not opinions. If you don’t find anything there, you can consult the attached resource on “How to find sources of information through the library,” which is a library guide, or watch the video, recorded in a previous semester, that I have posted at the end of this assignment.

Your review should be 250–300 words long and consist of two parts:

Describe the event/issue that is being covered and explain why it represents a civil rights issue (use our discussions on human rights and civil rights to explain). Quote the article and explain the importance of the quoted language. If different opinions are presented, be sure to say who you think is right and why.
After you analyze the article, add a short paragraph in which you discuss the reliability of the publisher (the newspaper or magazine or journal or website). Does it give a particular slant, as far as you can tell? Can you identify reasons to trust it? Or not to? Do most of the articles that surround the one you chose appear to be factual? In other words, this part of your review should be about the publication, not the article itself. For example, if the article you chose was published in The New York Times, this part of your review should be about The New York Times. This part of the assignment will help you learn to evaluate the reliability of particular publications and other sources. For more help evaluating sources, see the attached handout.

Determine if the movie/tv show would have been better if it were a more accurate representation.

THE HIDDEN FIGURES MOVIE 2017

History v. Hollywood

Choose a movie or tv series (will generally require watching a full season) dealing with some aspect of Global Women’s History.

The essential question to answer in your paper: If one knows nothing about the time period, topic, person, etc will viewing this movie/tv series help or hinder his/her understanding of the time period, topic, etc?

To answer this question, you should compare and contrast the actual history of the event(s) as opposed to Hollywood’s representation of the event(s). What did the writer/director/creators get right? Wrong? Be detailed!

The details are important. If the costuming or sets are inaccurate, that is worth noting. The same goes if they are accurate.

Determine if the movie/tv show would have been better if it were a more accurate representation.

Historically, America was considered to be a melting pot. However, across time that notion became challenged. How does the experience and treatment of Native Americans as well as the lived realities of minority groups contribute to a different understanding of groups and culture in the U.S.?

Does this challenge monocultural idealism? If so, how? Which assimilation model do American cities such as Milwaukee, Chicago, and New York City exude and why? Discuss your cultural identity and if it fits melting pot theory or another theory by identifying it. Also, describe your lived reality based on your cultural identity and norms
