Identify a historical failure created by a historical character that lived between 1700 and 1860.

Historical Failure was Christopher Columbus (select title)

Assignment Directions

Students are to write a 600-800 word paper about a failure in History. (Example George Custer–do not use him for your paper, just an example!)

Students will identify a historical failure created by a historical character that lived between 1700 and 1860.

Students should show why this failure happened and how it could have been prevented or resolved more effectively. Please note that you need to use logic and valid reasoning that goes beyond opinions or just a change of mind to properly address the issue of preventing a failure or correcting the failure. Use historical data and research to construct a solution to the failure. Your suggestion for correcting or preventing the failure should focus on systemic/cultural/political reasons for the failure.

Use Times New Roman 12 pt. font. Double-space.

Three cited sources are required. One of the three sources must be a primary source.

Sources should be cited according to Chicago Manual of Style. This means that you should have a separate bibliography page and footnotes in your paper. Failure to include a bibliography will result in a “0” on the assignment. Check to make sure you have included the bibliography before you send your document!

Use footnotes when you change sources in your paper. If you write an entire paragraph and have not changed sources, place a footnote at the end of the paragraph. Use footnotes at the end of quotes.

Please note there is a tool in the Exam Reviews and Tools Module that explains the footnote process and how to create the Bibliography according to Chicago Style. Use this tool!

Remember that all assignments in this course are submitted through Turnitin.Com and that students receiving a 40% match or higher will receive an “F” on the paper.

Demonstrate the ability to interpret and effectively cite primary sources.

Federalist Era

Students must demonstrate the ability to interpret and effectively cite primary sources. Students will use at least one primary source which relates to the era of history chosen by the student. The primary source should be presented in the PowerPoint presentation in such a way as to contribute to the students explanation of the era of history he/she is describing. Thus, simply copying a primary source into the presentation is not enough—the primary source must be interpreted to tell the historical story at hand. Review the links on primary sources found in Canvas for more information on interpreting primary sources.

Slide content must revolve around details that adequately explain the overall theme and impact of the historical era under study by the student.

All presentations must begin with a title slide.

Write one 5-7 page essay, choosing one of the five questions below. Pay careful attention to the rules of evidence. Pages refer to typed, double-spaced pages (about 300 words per page).

RULES OF EVIDENCE:

Your essay should draw details and/or short quotations from at least 8 different HIST 4750 readings or viewings. See below for a list of those HIST 4750 materials. As a general rule, try to use as much evidence as possible while still keeping to the seven-page limit. We had fewer materials on U.S. international relations and globalization, so if you choose questions 4 or 5, it’s ok if you use only five readings/viewings.

Explain how a relatively small number of Mongols come to create the world’s largest land empire.

World History Final

You just have to answer these questions below, 500-800 words each, and also included how it will be graded

1. For the period 600 BCE to 1200 CE, compare and contrast the societies of Africa with the societies of the Americas. (This can be done by selecting several points of comparison, and then using just one or two societies from Africa and one or two from the Americas as examples to illustrate your points).

2. Compare and contrast the society and culture of the Islamic Civilization and Christian Civilization (“Christendom”) during the period of time Strayer calls the “Third Wave” of civilization, and what is also sometimes called the “Middle Ages” (approximately 600-1450 CE at its broadest). Note, this is not asking you to compare the religious beliefs of the religions of Islam and Christianity, but rather to focus on the broader society and culture of these two civilizations.

3. All of these chapters in Part 3 of your texbook talk about the impact of increasing connection between civilizations (whether through trade, exploration, or conquest) on cultures (including religions). What do you feel were the three most important cultural impacts of these growing connections, and why did you pick those?

4. First, explain how a relatively small number of Mongols come to create the world’s largest land empire. Second, think about Part 3 of your book (which includes Chapters 7-12): All of Part 3 deals with increasing interactions between civilizations as trade and commerce expanded, and about how the cultures of the world were changed because of this. So then, why is there a chapter about the Mongols in this section of the book? (Or put another way – describe the role the Mongols played in creating a more interconnected world).

Grading Criteria for Exam Essays

This criteria is for one 25-point essay (on an exam with multiple essays). To adequately address the criteria below, each 25-point essay should take approximately 500-800 words to answer.

2 points (8%)
Essay format, with a clear (and brief) introduction. Information is incorporated into the narrative of the essay in an organized way. Grammar and punctuation mistakes do not detract from the essay.

4 points (16%)
Essay addresses all parts of the question. The essay is balanced (meaning, it does not focus too much on one part of the question while insufficiently addressing another part).

4 points (16%)
Essay demonstrates critical thinking and depth of analysis, including the ability to bring together and connect information from various time periods and regions in meaningful ways when responding to the question. See below for more about critical thinking.

5 points (24%)
Uses appropriate specific examples (ideally from the book or discussion forums), with one or two examples to support each assertion in the essay.

10 points (40%)
Demonstrates content understanding through the way information is selected and described (the more you use your own words to describe concepts, the easier it is to determine that you understand the information). This is also closely linked with the use of specific examples (the more you select and explain appropriate examples and connect them to your ideas, the more evident “understanding” will be).
