Included in the causes of the American Civil War was a loss of faith by Southerners in the United States government. They felt outnumbered by the Northern politicians and bankers and consequently decided to remake the United States in a new model, called the Confederate States of America.

Relatively recently Iraq and Afghanistan were/are immersed in turmoil over a number of divisive issues that prevents them from consolidating into true nation states. Various factions within these countries continue to battle against each other.
