DISCOURSE DEVELOPMENT
Much of this course will be devoted to professional discourse development. Discourse, as opposed to mere discussion, shapes the way we perceive the world and its phenomena, such as health and healthcare. In other words, the way we talk or write about an issue or object has the power to determine the way we recognize, think about, and value that issue. As emerging nurse-advocates and educators on the front line of policy work, it is imperative not only that you understand the power of your professional discourse but also that you cultivate it. Through command of the discourse, you can effect change!
Your first exercise in discourse development focuses on Policy.

How has the APRN Consensus Model changed education and licensure requirements in Texas, if any? Analyze the potential benefits and risks of these changes.
Write a 500-550 word Discourse post on the above policy statement. Conclude the Paper/Post with one thoughtful question for your peers to continue discussion

Apply the physical, chemical and microscopic examinations of an urinalysis to a case study. Describe the various urinalysis tests, indicate abnormal results and determine what abnormal conditions they may detect.

The urinalysis is a diagnostic procedure used in diagnoses of several conditions. Urines are collected and analyzed by 3 methods:

Physical – color, turbidity are examined
Chemical – a dipstick is a strip of test chemicals placed on small pads. The dipstick is literally dipped into the urine and removed, and then colors of the pads are compared to determine any chemicals present.
Microscopic examination – urine is spun down in a centrifuge and then a drop is placed on a microscopic slide, cover-slipped and placed under a microscope. This slide is read by qualified professionals.
This exercise is specifically designed for the medical assistants and medical lab technicians taking Basic A & P. But we all should understand why physicians often use the urinalysis for diagnosis.

Objectives:

Apply the physical, chemical and microscopic examinations of an urinalysis to a case study.
Describe the various urinalysis tests, indicate abnormal results and determine what abnormal conditions they may detect.
Select the following urinary conditions that apply to the case study.
calculi
glycosuria
albuminuria
ketonuria
hematuria
hemoglobinuria
pyuria

In defense of the right to assisted suicide, shouldn’t those who are terminally ill have a right to die with dignity?Discuss.

In defense of the right to assisted suicide, shouldn’t those who are terminally ill have a right to die with dignity?
Patients who are forced to deal with the fact of a terminal illness is taking over them deserve a platform to showcase a debate about whether they have a right to die with dignity and not have to wait for the illness to kill them slowly.
Step 3: Propose a justification for the statement.
Patients should not have to wait for the illness to kill them slowly and painfully. The right to autonomy is a fundamental human right and we all deserve to feel valued and respected.
Step 4: Identify 2-3 sources
Math, Suresh Bada, and Santosh K Chaturvedi. “Euthanasia: right to life vs right to
die.” The Indian journal of medical research vol. 136,6 : 899-902.
J. David Velleman’s “Against the Right to Die” The Velleman paper is interesting because he argues AGAINST physician assisted suicide on autonomy grounds. I think it will make your paper stronger if you consider some of his arguments and try to offer responses to them.
