Compare and contrast how the two ethical theories you have chosen are different.

Mental health and gun violence

For your signature assignment, you will be applying two ethical theories to an ethical problem. Examples of such problems are euthanasia for terminal patients, capital punishment: capricious and arbitrary, police brutality, abortion, simulated killing, and so forth.

Your topic will have to be approved by me, so send me a brief synopsis as soon as you know what you want to write on. Your essay should be at least 6-7 pages. The body of the essay should be around 1000 words.

In the early modules, we discussed ethical theories. These are ethical relativism, ethical egoism, utilitarianism, Kant’s deontology, and natural law theory/virtue ethics.
In the later modules of the course,we discussed several problems in applied ethics. You may choose from those applied ethics cases or choose one of your own.

Structure of the Essay
1. Introduction
Give a brief history and background of your topic. For example, ‘euthanasia for terminally ill patients is an ethically right choice to make in many cases.’ The main arguments you present in this essay will defend this position.

2. Body of Essay
Select two ethical theories to use in the main body of your essay.State and explain this theory and apply it to your moral issue.

The second theory will give the opposite analysis. If your”X is morally right,” then the counterargument will try to show that x is morally wrong. In this way, you will be giving a balanced account of your topic. Moreover, it would be good to provide some of your own arguments for why the counter-view is faulty.Academic sources are good at this point of your essay as well.

Compare and contrast how the two ethical theories you have chosen are different. You may label one section of your essay, “Comparing the Theories.” The next section might be labeled, “Contrasting the Theories.”

3. Conclusion
In your conclusion, you should reaffirm your ethical theory that supports your argument; as well, you need to include a final section on why that ethical theory also helps make other ethically right decisions when faced with other difficult ethical decisions. This part of your conclusion describes your ethical stance moving forward and your confidence in the ethical theory you have chosen.

The paper itself must be an academically formatted paper (APA). Your academic support must include at least 3 credible academic sources that discuss either the ethical issue you chose or the ethical systems you describe in the paper.

Your paper should be in the following APA format:
1. Title page
2. Abstract
3. Main body
4. References

Do you think that elements of critical reasoning, or learning critical reasoning, could help combat implicit bias? Why or why not?

In much of the public discourse following George Floyd’s murder, and the social movement following, the topic of implicit bias has been front of mind. Implicit bias is a bias or belief that one may hold that they are not conscious of, but may be expressed in certain ways (ex. a white woman and black man are walking towards each other on the street, and the white woman clutches her purse a little tighter as they pass each other.). Do you think that elements of critical reasoning, or learning critical reasoning, could help combat implicit bias? Why or why not?

How do you think critical reasoning could help to move these issues in a positive direction, and how can that be applied in a way that people do not feel threatened?

Recently we have gone through (and are still going through) a pandemic, a massive social movement for racial equality, a financial crisis, and we just came out of an election year. Much of the public discourse surrounding all of these current issues shows polarized viewpoints and an inability for viewpoints to change when presented with new information, an openness to hearing others’ views, or generally a desire to engage in critical reasoning. How do you think critical reasoning could help to move these issues in a positive direction, and how can that be applied in a way that people do not feel threatened? You do not have to respond with references to the reading, but it may be helpful for you to think about this question in reference to the reading.

Describe some of the unorthodox strategies covered by Terris during this era that made Lockheed become a byword for the shady practices of American multi-national corporations, and a major impetus for new legislation.

After reading Chapter 2 of the text, please write a 4-5 page essay that addresses the following:

Lockheed has an interesting history that seemed innocent enough up until around the 1950s. You’ll note on p. 56 of Terris’ book that the company began to engage in some questionable sales strategies with other nations in an effort sell the F-104 Starfighter so as to recoup costs when their US sales strategy failed.

Describe some of the unorthodox strategies covered by Terris during this era that made Lockheed become a byword for the shady practices of American multi-national corporations, and a major impetus for new legislation.
On the issue of overseas bribes, Terris asks the questions, “Who was hurt by the [overseas bribes to secure sales of aircraft]? The competitors, of course, but what was unethical about beating out the competition that was playing by the same rules?” (p.59). What do you think about a situation where underhanded and back door deals are the way the game is played if everybody is on the same playing field? That is to say, if everybody is playing by the same shady rules, is it unethical to compete?

In your reading you will note that defense contractors continued to find themselves in hot water well into the 1970s as a result of overpricing and additional charges of bribery. In the late 70s Lockheed established its first code of ethics and later the major defense contractors came to the table to level the playing field with the Defense Industry Initiative (DII), by agreeing on a set of ethical principles. This was an important turning point as was bringing Norman Augustine on board.
Why was the DII so important to the eventual success of Lockheed Martin’s ethics program?
Discuss Norman Augustine’s and Dilbert’s contribution in helping Lockheed Martin turn the corner with its ethics program.

You’ll also explore the biological mechanisms behind addiction. The central hypothesis is that behavioral and cognitive impairment caused by drug addiction may be due to changes in the brain and the imbalance of neurotransmitters in the neuron. You’ll also look at how our biological systems affect our motivations.

Overview

In the Analysis of Articles assessment, you analyze the research component in the literature of the field for the topic of your interest. In this assessment, you’ll delve deeper by analyzing the theory behind the topic. You’ll gain an understanding of the theory before analyzing and synthesizing it into the literature review.

Preparation

You will be using the resources you choose for this assessment as part of your Literature Review assessment and to help support a proposed research study of your choosing for the Study Applications assessment. Note that the assessments in this course build on one another. It is a good idea to look ahead to the other assessments to begin to think about a topic you might be interested in researching. This is a good time to select articles for this assessment that will help support your ideas for the other assessments.

Neurobiology of ecstasy (MDMA) abuse.
Progression of reading ability in a child diagnosed with autism.
Effectiveness of a new drug to treat depression.
