How effectively does the writer of your chosen text convey the main idea of the text? In what ways do ethos, logos, and pathos affect the author’s ability to persuade the audience?

Rhetorical Analysis

For your first paper, your assignment is to write a rhetorical analysis of a text of your choice. Be sure to select something complex enough to allow you to write a thoughtful and insightful analysis. By definition, the act of analysis is breaking something into its component parts and examining the ways in which those parts contribute to the whole. Textual analysis often involves extracting and creating meaning. Rhetorical analysis is something more specific. Rhetoric involves all the available means of persuasion. So as you write a rhetorical analysis, you are not analyzing only the meaning of the text; you are analyzing the effectiveness of the text by examining the different strategies that the author uses to persuade their audience.

1. How effectively does the writer of your chosen text convey the main idea of the text? In what ways do ethos, logos, and pathos affect the author’s ability to persuade the audience?

For this topic, you must include thoughtful analysis of direct quotations from the text of your choice.

Are the steps clear? Do the visuals help or hinder the message?

For your Discussion Board this week, you will create a similar list of steps with accompanying images  for a new task: a “How-To” for completing a past assignment from this course!
For your initial post this week, you’ll be making a chart similar to the one below that details the steps of your task on the right, and includes images on the left to accompany each step.
The task you choose for your “How-To” guide can be an entire assignment, or merely a portion of one.
Try to choose a task that can be completed effectively in 5-10 steps, as longer instructions might get overwhelming. Your initial post is important, as you’ll be using it to make a presentation for this week’s Writing Assignment.
In your responses, assist your peers with their presentations. Are the steps clear? Do the visuals help or hinder the message?

Describe the rival source you found and why you selected that source. What makes this a credible source?

For this week’s discussion, you will find a credible source that either presents a rival perspective to your argument for change or will help you address a rival hypothesis that you identified in the Unit 4 Assignment. Then, you will share a key passage from the source that is relevant to the rival hypothesis and paraphrase that information using a signal phrase and in-text citation. Respond to the following prompts in at least two well-developed paragraphs :

1. Identify the rival hypothesis you need to address in your essay.
2. Describe the rival source you found and why you selected that source. What makes this a credible source?
3. Copy and paste a 1–5 sentence passage from the source and label it as the “Original Passage.”
4. Paraphrase the short passage you shared in a way that you might use the idea in your essay . Be sure to use in-text citations with any sentences paraphrasing ideas from the source, e.g., or According to Jane Doe . Remember from your reading that an effective paraphrase sets up the information and explains it in a way that connects it to your argument .
