Is the five-schedule classification of controlled substances outdated and in need of revision?

Proposed changes in drug control policy often evoke strong reactions despite major historical shifts in US drug policy. For this discussion, we will be looking at whether or not the five-schedule classification of controlled substances is outdated and in need of revision, and, if it is revised, which drug classifications are most in need of revision. Be sure to take into consideration new knowledge regarding drugs and substance abuse, shifts in the popular culture regarding the use of some substances, and the emergence of new recreational drugs in your post. To get started, watch the brief video here:

How did the exercise feel to do? E.g. did it challenge any thoughts/values you have? What new knowledge did you gain?

When undertaking the reflective task on the risk of serious harm activity please ensure that you use a model of reflection. This link provides an overview of a number of reflective models. This is not an exhaustive list and you are not restricted to what is contained here, use any model that works for you.

As this task is only 500 words you may wish to focus on one element of learning from the experience, for example, the impact of diversity/marginalisation on your risk assessment, reflection on your personal bias, using your professional discretion when not in agreement with an actuarial score.

The following questions are helpful pointers for the reflective task, however they are not exhaustive:

How did the exercise feel to do? E.g. did it challenge any thoughts/values you have?

What new knowledge did you gain?

Consider the extent to which you use the evidence base in your decision making

How will this inform your practice in the future?

Do not use the subheadings of your chosen reflective model in your writing.

First person language is encouraged when you are exploring your experience, values and emotions.

Criminal obsessions

Analyze violence, power, and obsessions through the lens of trauma regarding immigration, migrations, current border realities and criminality in general. What is Butler’s criticism of ‘self-defence’ as justified violence? What is the definition of ‘political violence’ that Fernando Coronil and Julie Skurski work with in their Introduction to States of Violence?

UESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
• What are the different possible definitions of violence? What about ‘political’
violence?
• What is the definition of ‘political violence’ that Fernando Coronil and Julie
Skurski work with in their Introduction to States of Violence?
• Why is the relationship between power and ‘violence’?
• What is Butler’s criticism of ‘self-defence’ as justified violence?
• What do Coronil and Skursi mean when they write: ‘the rhetoric of violence is
thus inseparable from the violence of rhetoric’ ?
• When political activists and leaders contemplate the question of violence, they
usually do so in terms of the congruence between means and ends. How do
the texts you have read for this week theorise the instrumentality of violence?
What are some of the justifications and critiques of violence they offer?
• How does Arendt differentiate power, strength, force, authority, and violence?
What are her respective definitions of these terms? Do they make sense to
you?
• What is the distinction that Nelson Mandela makes between terrorism and the
type of violence that Umkhonto we Sizwe resorted to?
Do you agree with this difference?
• How does Nelson Mandela’s explanation of the movement’s recourse to
violence as “responsible leadership” compare to Arendt’s view that ‘power and
violence are opposites’?

What is jurisdiction, and how does it impact state and federal courts? What is concurrent jurisdiction?

State and Federal Court Systems
What is jurisdiction?

Jurisdiction is the foundation of every case. A case must be filed in a court that possesses jurisdiction. You are currently working in the District Attorney’s Office as an investigator, and you have been asked to investigate the court that has jurisdiction over a case that involves the robbery of a local bank and two murders. The district attorney has asked you to research the questions to help her make a decision.
Jurisdiction is very important within the court system because it is what decides whether the state or federal government has the authority to prosecute the case. In a 2-page paper, research the following:
What is jurisdiction, and how does it impact state and federal courts?
What is concurrent jurisdiction?
Provide 1 example of a crime for which the state court has jurisdiction and another example of a federal crime for which the federal court has jurisdiction. Why does each respective court have jurisdiction for the crimes that you have listed?
Provide 1 example of a crime for which concurrent jurisdiction exists, that is, the criminal act could be prosecuted in state or federal court or both. In the example that you provided; in which court do you think that the case should be prosecuted? Why?
Next, locate the Web site for your state’s Supreme Court. Discuss the make-up of your state’s highest appellate court. TEXAS is my state
