Did the show address life insurance realistically or fantastically? Did it involve legal drama or criminal charges? Was life insurance part of a scam, a crime, or a political maneuver?

Or was it depicted as something normal, benign, or beneficial? Talk about your own assumptions about life and disability insurance; did going through this chapter change your opinion on it? Why is insurance often portrayed in the same ways on television or in stories, and how does this compare to your own thoughts on it?

You own and operate a full-service 24-hour auto repair shop—the only 24-hour shop in your town. In fact, you are pretty sure it is the only 24-hour auto repair shop in the state. Your business is now a success, but you had a lot of trouble initially finding an auto mechanic willing to work the late shift. You are now concerned that this mechanic could leave you at any time and open—or help someone else open—another 24-hour shop. You decide to ask him to sign a non-competition agreement saying that if he ever leaves your shop, he cannot work as an auto mechanic anywhere in your state for the next seven years. He looks at you and says, “Are you out of your mind?” What alternative terms of a non-competition agreement do you think would be more reasonable?

Crisis Management

Organizations can be subjected to bad press easily in this age of global communication. Offending groups of stakeholders or consumers can have lasting and widespread consequences for a company. An organization may be linked to a CEO, public figure, or celebrity brand endorser. When consumers hear about the individual, they automatically make a connection with the brand or organization and vice versa. This is advantageous when the “face of the company” is viewed positively. But when controversy strikes, that association can have a detrimental effect on the company and send it into crisis management.
