Is there a way to live longer? Extend your life further than your peers?

Response to posting attached

Is there a way to live longer? Extend your life further than your peers? These are questions I have thought of before but typically answer with no, until reading this article. In this article for the New York Times by Carl Zimmer, the topic of lengthening one’s life via destructive cells in a person’s body is discussed at length.
The article opens with the strange but accurate description of our cells as being cannibals. The cells in our bodies eat one another in order to create new parts. Alongside this, discoveries of links to diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer have been found in relation to these cannibalistic cells. But contrary to what you might assume, the “…body’s ability to self destruct…” may actually extend lives.
To get specific, the article mentions two different kinds of cell recycling factories. One is used as “building blocks” made from a cluster of proteins known as Proteasome. The other is used for much larger tasks, such as demolition and is made from toxic enzymes. These are called lysosomes.

When is a woman most fertile? What are the physical and emotional changes that tend to occur during this cycle, and why do these occur?

Describe menstrual cycle
From aescribe menstrual cycle n anatomical and physiological perspective, describe the menstrual cycle. Pay special attention to the hormonal changes during the cycle. When is a woman most fertile? What are the physical and emotional changes that tend to occur during this cycle, and why do these occur?
Describe the biological and physiological aspects of the sexual response cycle as described by Masters and Johnson.

Note: Many researchers and sexual health educators feel the response cycle is incomplete. As part of your response, include your thoughts regarding whether the response cycle accurately represents what happens to the human system during sexual activity. Also, comment on the reasons why many researchers and educators feel it is incomplete.

How can this be explained?Using the varying bills of the Galapagos Finches in figure 13.3 and additional research, explain how microevolution is evidenced.

Microevolution and Macroevolution

Darwin’s philosophical worldview then took him beyond his evidence to a conviction that environmental constraints could create whole new structures and organisms. Soon Darwin’s theory of macroevolution replaced the Creator with an environment that could create solely by constraint.

According to Chapter 13 section 13.1 of the course text, define microevolution and macroevolution.
The Galapagos islands have a great diversity of landscapes – from lush vegetation to nearly barren lava fields yet the Galapagos Finches survive on each island. How can this be explained?
Using the varying bills of the Galapagos Finches in figure 13.3 and additional research, explain how microevolution is evidenced.

What most stood out to you from our class meeting? To what extent did our class activity support your learning about implicit bias and how it plays a role a STEM and healthcare?

Reflecting on bias research

We want to give you space to reflect on all that was discussed amongst your groups. Recall that you were in groups of peers who read the same article as you and in a separate group of peers who read a paper different from the one that you were assigned . take a few moments to think back to the ideas your classmates shared about the following:

Reasons for why the article is important and could inform other practices.
Write a 250+ word reflection and be sure to address the following points:

What most stood out to you from our class meeting?
To what extent did our class activity support your learning about implicit bias and how it plays a role a STEM and healthcare?
Thinking back to your expert and jigsaw groups, what about your group dynamics worked for you? Is there something that might further encourage you to share more with your peers in your groups?

What are the perceptual features of the phenomenon? What is known about the pathways that it relies on in the brain? Do we understand either the molecular basis of your topic, or how it relates to neural activity?

The Neuroscience of Vocal Communication

Paper writeups will be due the final day of presentations, by the beginning of the day (5PM) on Fri Apr 29. Either email or hard copy is fine. Think of this as a general review paper of your personal specific topic, that describes the major ideas in the field and the state of the art of recent experiments.

General info: a good target range is ~10-11 pages at 1.5 spacing. No strict length requirements – conciseness is a plus, but grading does depend on covering your topic in reasonable depth. A good goal would be to base your report on ~5-8 literature sources, including 1-2 general reviews, and 3-4 primary papers. Other sources are fine as long as they’re reliable, but the majority of your work should be based on literature sources.

Some ideas for organizing your paper: Reviews will often provide some historical perspective, leading up to – what are the prevailing ideas in the field in the present day? Which general principles are well agreed on? What experiments have been most influential in guiding thinking? Is there any controversy and/or disagreement over major points?

For a sensory topic, other questions might be – What are the perceptual features of the phenomenon? What is known about the pathways that it relies on in the brain? Do we understand either the molecular basis of your topic, or how it relates to neural activity? What are the outstanding questions in the field that still need to be addressed in the future?
