Does the theory of evolution raise more problems than it resolves? If so,how?

Darwin’s theory of evolution-survival of the fittest

FORMAL PAPER 2

Summarize the theory of evolution by means of natural selection. Be sure to include how Darwin used artificial selection and variations under domesticity, as well as the condition of survival of the fittest as the survival of that which fits in best. Does the theory of evolution raise more problems than it resolves? If so,how?

How can we help all children overcome stereotypes that may influence their educational performance?

What We Learn From 50 Years of Kids Drawing Scientists and Understanding Why Girls Underperform at Science

When you picture a scientist, what does that person look like?

When you were a child, how did you picture scientists?

What role does gender stereotyping play in the tendency for girls to grow up to be scientists?

How does this vary around the world?

What kind of cultural messages do we send to children by the way different professions are portrayed in the media, books, movies, and television?

How can we help all children overcome stereotypes that may influence their educational performance?

What activities are included in their job, from the basic tasks of an ordinary workday to bigger requirements such as earning and maintaining a professional license?

Project II: Making a Living

ANTH202 – Fall 2021

This project asks you to discover how someone around you is “making a living” – working at a job, multiple jobs or in a profession. Work is defined broadly—being a homemaker and being a CEO of a big company are both ways of making a living but involve very different activities.

Locate one person to interview in order to explore “work” through the eyes of a particular individual. You may interview someone you already know, but try to choose someone whose background differs from your own in some way. Find out what kind of work they do, the importance of their job, and how they make ends meet (or not) with the money they make from their activities. All interviews should use the permission sheet below.

Introduction: Who are you interviewing? How do they “make a living”? How do they participate in the United States economy (both formally and informally)?

What making a living entails: What activities are included in their job, from the basic tasks of an ordinary workday to bigger requirements such as earning and maintaining a professional license?

How does this work impact the individual concerned: Do they get satisfaction from their work? Does it enable them to make the living they desire?

How does this profession fit in with the larger cultural landscape and economy: What are the general prospects for this kind of work? Are the jobs easy or difficult to get? Can people in this profession make ends meet? What does looking at this profession say about the status of the entire economy?

Conclusion: What key information did you learn from your research? What concepts from class can help us understand this way of making a living?

Papers should be 2-3 pages, 12 point Times font, 1 inch margins. All papers should incorporate at least two additional sources into the discussion of data from the interview and must include a bibliography.

In addition, papers will be marked on spelling, grammar, organization and adherence to an approved academic writing style guide (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.).

What is digital ethnography and how do anthropologists do research in virtual worlds?

Digital Anthropology and Technology

Reflection 22

For today’s assignment I would like you to consider the intersection of advanced technology and anthropology. Please watch the following TED Talk, We Are All Cyborgs Now (link here), and make sure that you have read the essay on digital anthropology and the lecture notes.

Answer the following questions in your assignment:

1) Describe the interconnection between anthropology portrayed in your course materials today. Use examples and think about how technology has implications for our subjects as anthropologists as well as the methods we use.

2) Why does the speaker suggest that we are all cyborgs?

3) What is digital ethnography and how do anthropologists do research in virtual worlds?

4) How might advanced technologies such as social robots help us answer the question “what does it mean to be human?”

Why do you think the state has survived?Do you think human populations can develop alternative political organizations in the future?

Although state societies are efficient in organizing people and resources, they also are associated with many disadvantages, such as extreme disparities in wealth and opportunities, use of force to keep people in line, and harsh laws. Given these difficulties, why do you think the state has survived?Do you think human populations can develop alternative political organizations in the future?

Can you identify evidence for animal domestication in the faunal data and is there any circumstantial evidence for plant domestication?

Archeological Anthropology

Describe patterns of seasonal site distribution. There is no reason to suspect that any one group’s subsistence area incorporated the entire area, nor that all people living in the region followed the same subsistence pattern.

1. Can you identify evidence for animal domestication in the faunal data and is there any circumstantial evidence for plant domestication? If so,in what sites and during what periods do you find this evidence?

2. What factors do you think led to the domestication of animals (and perhaps plants) in this region? Do you think human population pressure played a role? And do the data support Ingold’s alternative interpretation of the trajectory of domestication?

3. What seems to be the impact of domestication on human lifeways – in terms of mobility, group size, and political economy? Do you see evidence of major changes in the use of natural resources around these sites that are correlated with domestication?

4. Are there certain areas where domestication seems not to have occurred,or domesticates are lacking? What reasons might explain the(se)absence(s) – i.e., what factors may have led to the domestication of animals and plants in some subregions, and not others?

What ideas about the relationship between changing technologies, language, and social relations could you suggest to you friend as worth studying?

Consider how changing technologies are altering the ways you communicate with family, friends, and even strangers. Suppose your best friend decides to study sociolinguistics in graduate school.

What ideas about the relationship between changing technologies, language, and social relations could you suggest to you friend as worth studying?

Refer to concepts you’ve learned from the textbook this week.

What is the connection between the World Bank and IMF policies and the increase in political repression and militarization in the developing world?

Globalization Blog

Steps to complete the assignment:

Select your topic. It is supposed to be current, so please do not go back more than 1 year.

We spent the last two weeks discussing anthropology, culture, and globalization. What piqued your interest? What are you interested in exploring in more detail? Depending on your chosen topic, you will want to be specific in terms of location. For example, if I am interested in learning more about how renewable energy projects impact indigenous societies, rather than looking at renewable energy in a broad sense, I would explore how solar energy impacts the Quechan Tribe.

It is not enough to simply report about an issue you read. You need to dig deep and discuss the cultural impacts the society is facing as a result of your chosen topic.

Have provided a few questions below to help get you started.

How has globalization impacted indigenous peoples?

How has globalization impacted specifically on women and gender roles?

Discuss the origins and consequences of the privatization of water as a result of globalization.

What is the relationship between globalization and the rise of militarism?

How are college students using their clout to fight for social justice? What current initiatives have captured the attention of college students today?

Explore NGOs and discuss how they are helping local communities in their fight against globalization.

What is the connection between the World Bank and IMF policies and the increase in political repression and militarization in the developing world?

Demonstrate the ability to engage with literature in an objective manner, support arguments with research, critically examine the views of others, and produce coherent conclusions regarding globalization.

Globalization Blog

In this assignment, you will think critically about global issues within a cultural context by exploring an area of interest to you and sharing your research via a Blog. Beyond the class context, this assignment is important because, in today’s world, there is a demand in business and industry to hire people who can work with people of other nations and cultures and, if need be, can travel independently internationally to promote their business or industry. In addition, the world faces global challenges that will take interdisciplinary groups to solve; providing access to clean water for everyone on this planet and making clean, renewable energy affordable, to name a few. These global challenges will need to be solved by gathering and sharing knowledge across disciplines, institutions, and on a global scale.

This assignment provides opportunities to use/practice these learning outcomes:

Demonstrate an understanding of global interconnectedness and critically examine your own positions in these global processes.

Evaluate and apply knowledge and skills of cultural anthropology to cultural practices, real-world issues, and current global processes.

Demonstrate the ability to engage with literature in an objective manner, support arguments with research, critically examine the views of others, and produce coherent conclusions regarding globalization.
