How is this experience going to influence your development as a researcher and your future research project?

Description

Assignment 1: Experiencing Research Report and ReflectionActions

You have been asked to organize for yourself a practical research experience. There are 3 clear ways you could do this:

Immerse yourself in a research experience by participating in a research project being run at the University of Stirling as a research participant e.g. participation in staff or PhD or MSc student research project.

Engage with a researcher – interview them about one specific research project they are engaged in. Ideally this will be a post-doctoral research fellow, a research assistant or a PhD or MSc student rather than a staff member.

Engage with a stakeholder about research – identify a stakeholder, this may be the coach of a club you are a member of, or your workplace manager (sports/health-related), or employee of a charity (sports/health-related), or member of NHS or social care staff and interview them about what would be an important research question to answer in their workplace (related to Sports Studies/Health) and how this might be conducted as a project – you are looking for their ideas.

given Covid-19 making it difficult to participate in face to face research, if you have participated in a research project in the past year and can remember enough about it to be able to write in the level of detail in the notes below, then writing about this past experience will also be acceptable.

You will need to take notes after the research participation or during the interview to help with your write up. These should be descriptive and also your own reflections.

Assessment: The report should be no more than 1000 words and include two sections:

Part 1: Descriptive Report describing the research experience. A concise descriptive report of the research undertaken/discussed (about 2/3 of the report).

Part 2: A brief reflective report about your experience/what you have learned about research from this (about 1/3 of your report).

Notes to help you:

Adopt a structure that is logical and uses appropriate headings;

The style of writing and presentation should be clear and logical;

Write a descriptive section that clearly describes the research project engaged in or interviewed about. You should consider these questions:

What is the background research area?

What is the research question?

What is the methodology – quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods?

Who are the participants and why were they chosen?

What exact methods are being used and why?

What is the procedure of the research i.e. what did they do/talk about doing

How would they go about analysing the data?

Write a reflective section on your experience of the process and what you have learned about research through this experience relative to the research process. You should consider these questions:

Did you enjoy the experience?

What specific topic did you learn more about?

What specific research methods did you learn more about?

Which part of the research process do you think you learnt the most about?

How is this experience going to influence your development as a researcher and your future research project?

Describe each commercial and the intent. Explain the message and the language used then analyze how each of the elements in the commercial – images, music, and most importantly language – affects an audience.

Watch three commercials on TV. If you do not watch TV, you can use YouTube. You may do this assignment with others (friends, family, significant others, etc.) to discuss the techniques each advertiser is using to shape your thinking. However, you may not collaborate with another classmate and have the same info and answers. Each student will submit a separate assignment.

Here is what you will do:

1. Describe each commercial and the intent. Explain the message and the language used then analyze how each of the elements in the commercial – images, music, and most importantly language – affects an audience.

2. Pay particular attention, and listen closely, to the symbolic associations of various images and words (what do they symbolize/what is the meaning), and identify the powerful emotions that these associations elicit. What emotion is used? Think of what is said. If there is no speaking, are there words on the screen? Did they fit with the commercial and create the tone? Was the language use effective?

3. Are the commercials effective and what makes them effective? What influential roles do these commercials play in our culture as a whole (what do they do)?

For instance, think about how the impact of Nike commercials extends far beyond merely selling athletic shoes and sportswear to creating idealized images that people strive to emulate (Chaffee, 2004). Such as in the 1990’s with “I want to be like Mike!” and “Just do it!”. Today: “I’m lovin’ it!” with McDonald’s and “Like a good neighbor” with Jake from State Farm.

Which of the seven faulty listening behaviors do you tend to fall into more often (you could have more than one, and that’s ok!)?Explain

1. Which of the seven faulty listening behaviors do you tend to fall into more often (you could have more than one, and that’s ok!)?

2. Explain why you fall into them and explain what happens to the understanding of the language and communication used (meaning: do you understand the message being sent to you? Have you created conflict in that relationship? Has this ever impacted you at work? If you are not working, especially dual enrolled students, what about a time when you were volunteering, or a time at school in an organization such as ROTC, band, cheer, SGA or a sport, or even class.).

3. Then explain how you can become a better listener.

Develop a two-page Rhetorical Analysis of a published article that explores its rhetorical situation.

develop a two-page Rhetorical Analysis of a published article that explores its rhetorical situation. Remember that the rhetorical situation of an article has to do with its purpose, intended audience, and context. In your analysis, you’ll discuss these and other elements. The first step is to find an article that interests you. It is important to choose an article that makes a substantial argument for you to analyze.

Provide sufficient descriptive detail to provide adequate information for a subsequent discussion of proposed solutions/recommendations.

Section One – Problem Statement:

Provide an introduction to the case study selected for the final assignment due in Week 8.
Provide a detailed background of the subject company or enterprise.
Provide a description of the problem situation in which the subject company or enterprise finds itself.
Provide sufficient detail of the subject and its situation to provide the basis for identifying the problem it faces.

Section Two – Statement of Cause(s):

Provide analysis of what the root cause of the company/enterprise’s problem.
Provide sufficient descriptive detail to provide adequate information for a subsequent discussion of proposed solutions/recommendations.

Section Three – Case Elements: From the Problem Statement (Section 1), the third section will logically follow. This section of the paper should identify and provide analysis the root cause of the organization’s problem. The root cause should be described in such detail as to provide sufficient information for a discussion within this section of the paper and of proposed solutions/recommendations to be discussed in the next sections.

Section Four – Recommended Action Plan: From the prior section — Case Elements–the fourth section will select, from the alternatives discussed in Section Three, the best alternative and present it as the recommended solution. This section will provide a narrative as to why the recommended solution is the best alternative, with supporting logic and research. A high-level action plan which provides a description of implementation steps concludes this section.

Section Five – Case Solution: This section discusses the importance of the case study. This discussion takes the form of highlighting the issues discussed as well as their relevance and importance to the business world.

Compose a brief description that includes the technology and how it shaped the person’s experience of the world.

(1)Identify three specific examples from these articles of personal experiences with technology that particularly struck you. For each of your three examples:
(2)Compose a brief description that includes the technology and how it shaped the person’s experience of the world.
(3)Connect the example to any of the other Required Learning Materials we have covered and discussed throughout the course. Be sure to refer to a specific reading.
(4)Describe one of your personal experiences with technology or an experience of someone you know that in some way resembles the examples in these two chapters.
(5)Use two quotes from any of your resources to support or explain your points. Make sure to provide in-text citations for both quotes in MLA format.

Professional Athletes are Role Models
In 1993, Charles Barkley told the world that he wasn’t a role model in a controversial Nike commercial. Nearly 30 years later the debate on whether or not it is the responsibility of professional athletes to be role models continues today.
