Do the enforcement mechanisms for the FLSA match the challenges it presents? How might we amend the law or alter enforcement to account for the nature of work and changes in the labor market in the 21st Century?

The Fair Labor Standards Act provides overtime protections for non-exempt employees. At its inception, it was designed to be a broad statute covering the vast majority of workers. Some commentators have argued that the Act should be modernized. After all, the FLSA was passed in 1938 and reflects, at least in part, the political economy of the time it was passed and not the current era. The FLSA—like much of our work law—was designed for manufacturing in urban centers. It was designed mostly with men in mind. It was designed for able-bodied persons. It was designed to benefit a population that was mostly white. It was designed to address a world where most workers were employees. It was designed to preserve a particular balance of power between management and labor.
Do the enforcement mechanisms for the FLSA match the challenges it presents?
How might we amend the law or alter enforcement to account for the nature of work and changes in the labor market in the 21st Century?
If you were to modernize the FLSA, would you make changes to the scope of exempt and non-exempt employees? If so, how? Be specific in your analysis.
Cite to law and address counter-arguments that one might raise against your proposal.

How does the caregiver role affect family dynamics? What support services are available to support this role?

Reply to the following using at least 175 words per reply. Be professional and constructive in your discussion. Be sure to use FULL APA references and in-text citations.

1. Caring for older adults has become more intensive, complex, and long lasting than in the past. There are many barriers to caregivers receiving adequate preparation for their role. Evidence suggests that many caregivers experience negative psychological effects. Some caregivers are at higher risk than others, especially those who spend long hours caring for older adults with advanced dementia. Caregivers should have access to high-quality, evidence-based interventions designed to mitigate or prevent adverse health effects . How does the caregiver role affect family dynamics? What support services are available to support this role?

2. Women have shorter working lives because they tend to leave the workforce earlier than men. Based on data from the OECD, the average age for women to leave the labor-market in OECD countries is 62.3, which is about one to two years earlier than men. What are your thoughts on this?

Describe how the agency dealt with the public response to the incident. Determine what police leadership could do to reduce the chances that this type of ethical violation would occur in the future.

Ethical considerations would be lying, creating false documents, fabricating evidence, ignoring relevant evidence, etc.

Also, cases that do not involve a “public response” are not appropriate for this assignment. The “Police Agency Reaction to Public Response and Possible Police Leadership Courses of Action to Prevent Future Violations” is a key element of the assignment that is weighted with 35 points . If you choose a case for which there was no public response, you will not be able to earn any of these points.

If you have any doubts about what case to choose , discuss it with me.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper in which you do the following:

Describe the situation and how it was handled.
Explain the ethical implications of the officer’s action and the determining outcome.

The killing of Philandro Castille, for example, is not about ethics, it is about a police reaction to a perceived threat. The perceived threat might be deemed unfounded and the police action might be an overreaction, but these are not ethical considerations.

Ethical considerations would be lying, creating false documents, fabricating evidence, ignoring relevant evidence, etc.

Would you focus on identifying what goes right in people or on identifying the abnormal? How would approaches to treatment and intervention differ if society were to focus on positive psychology instead of abnormal psychology?

After viewing the video on positive psychology, weigh in on the following: Should abnormal psychology continue its focus on identifying the causes of psychological distress, classifying different symptoms and seeking effective treatment to reduce these symptoms, or should the field focus on improving knowledge of what goes right in happy people and trying to improve these techniques in the general population? If you were to start a society from scratch and wanted to improve the lives of its members, would you focus on identifying what goes right in people or on identifying the abnormal? How would approaches to treatment and intervention differ if society were to focus on positive psychology instead of abnormal psychology?
