Assignment A

One of Americans’ most cherished liberties is the right to free speech and expression; however, the courts have clearly ruled that the right to free speech granted in the First Amendment is not absolute. Our readings in this lesson discuss sedition (speech that criticizes the government), symbolic speech, and “offensive” speech. Choose two of these types of speech and write an essay that explains how the courts have ruled regarding them overtime. Be sure to specifically discuss at least two court cases that have dealt with each of these issues (for a total of at least four cases).
