Is there a way to live longer? Extend your life further than your peers?

Is there a way to live longer? Extend your life further than your peers? These are questions I have thought of before but typically answer with no, until reading this article. In this article for the New York Times by Carl Zimmer, the topic of lengthening one’s life via destructive cells in a person’s body is discussed at length.
The article opens with the strange but accurate description of our cells as being cannibals. The cells in our bodies eat one another in order to create new parts. Alongside this, discoveries of links to diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer have been found in relation to these cannibalistic cells. But contrary to what you might assume, the “…body’s ability to self destruct…” may actually extend lives.
To get specific, the article mentions two different kinds of cell recycling factories. One is used as “building blocks” made from a cluster of proteins known as Proteasome. The other is used for much larger tasks, such as demolition and is made from toxic enzymes. These are called lysosomes.
