Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise, the black and Latino teenagers were convicted and coerced into admitting to the rape of Trisha Meili despite being innocent and under the age to be interrogated without their parents. The young teenagers were exposed to violence and presented in the media as ‘perverted’ rapists.
The media had a large impact on their case and is perhaps one of the reasons racial profiling still exists. All five teenagers were of a black or ethnic minority and convicted despite no evidence against them; the reason for their arrest was purely on the basis of their skin colour which links to the themes of racism and victimization.
