The high-water mark for American liberalism between 1945 and 2000 was President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. His administration pursued social reform in a multitude of areas and concerns ranging from education to the environment to race and many more.
Johnson announced his administration’s goal of creating a Great Society at the 1965 State of the Union address to Congress; you will find a link to the address below. After reading the portion of the address that focuses on the Great Society, you need to compose an essay answering the following question: How does LBJ justify the proposed actions by the federal government?
A good essay will identify key elements in the Great Society and explore whether or not the federal government should or should not be involved in that aspect of American society as LBJ described. In the conclusion, briefly explain if another Great Society effort is necessary today and why.
