With the arrival of the post-war period, science became big: the military-industry complex, nuclear weapons, nuclear power, and space programmes. To some, Big Science was the apogee of human achievement: a giant collective effort testament to the promethean, limitless genius of mankind. To others, Big Science was secretive, bureaucratic, undemocratic, expensive, sexist and racist.
